“In a dérive [drift] one or more persons during a certain period drop their relations, their work and leisure activities, and all their other usual motives for movement and action, and let themselves be drawn by the attractions of the terrain and the encounters they find there.”
– Guy Debord
This is a space to record your experiences drifting through Providence, RI. The framework comes from the theories of the Situationists, a group of artists and anti-capitalist agitators formed in 1950s Paris. It is “a technique of rapid passage through varied ambiences,” from which new experiences are had, intuitions gleaned, and imaginations sparked as one leaves behind the inbred functional context of the cityscape to inscribe their own meanings and adventures.
We’ve made a PDF to get you started (you can also find printed copies of this ‘zine throughout the city – they’re free!). When you’re done, record the story of your trip, photos, impressions of the whole process – whatever you feel like – here. Think of it as a dialogue with Providence.
Be safe, and enjoy yourself.
